Photonics
Thermal management and spatial radiation profiling of 265–280 nm SMD LED arrays, replacing fragile mercury-vapor tubes with instantaneous, mercury-free germicidal irradiation.
Jahanzeb Sheikh, PhD · Biomedical Engineering
I engineer 275 nm solid-state photonic devices to eradicate multi-drug-resistant hospital pathogens — Pseudomonas aeruginosa, S. aureus, and aerosolized respiratory viruses — while preserving human fibroblast viability.

About
"Real biomedical engineering is never about publishing papers in isolation. It is about closing the loop between irradiance modeling, bacterial petri dishes, cell viability assays, and manufacturable devices that nursing staff can actually hold."
My journey began at NED University and Sir Syed University of Engineering & Technology (SSUET), where I built foundations in circuit design, biosensors, and biomedical instrumentation. On hospital wards, one reality struck me repeatedly: patients surviving complex surgeries only to contract lethal, antibiotic-resistant infections.
Chemical wipes leave residues. Low-pressure mercury lamps generate ozone and pose catastrophic glass and mercury disposal hazards. My thesis: could narrow-band UV-C LEDs at exactly 275 nm deliver the photonic dose required to rupture bacterial DNA and viral RNA, while remaining safe for surrounding human tissue?
At Universiti Teknologi Malaysia and the IJN-UTM Cardiovascular Engineering Centre, I designed precision radiometric testbeds, tuned SMD diode arrays, and conducted in-vitro trials against P. aeruginosa and S. aureus. Today I serve as an Assistant Professor at SSUET and a Reviewing Editor for Springer Nature, continuing to advance translational photobiology.
